Topic Born Again
Prayer
Father God, I pray that all who look at this will be touched by your Spirit and you will use it for your Glory, Amen.
We're actually going back a little bit here, last week we covered John 3:16-18 and this week we're going to have a look at John 3:1-8. This is a bit of a longer passage but we're not going to look at each verse, we're just going to look at it as a whole. So the passage says:
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
9"How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.
10"You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
Passage Explanation
Now, first of all lets get a grip on who is in the passage, there are two people. There is Jesus and a man called Nicodemus. Jesus we talked about last week, so who is Nicodemus? Nicodemus was a member of the jewish ruling council and hence was a very powerful person, he was a jew and would have known the old testament scriptures extremely well. He would be considered an expert in the scriptures and so when he asked Jesus a question this was a powerful and knowledgable man asking him.
What we see is that Nicodemus calles Jesus a Rabbi (that is a teacher) and says that he knows Jesus has come from God and he says he knows this because of the miracles Jesus has done.
Jesus response is suprising, he says this:
3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.
Now if you are thinking, what is Jesus talking about... then you're exactly the same as Nicodemus. He was completely confused by what Jesus meant, he actually thought that Jesus was suggesting people when they are older would have to go back into their mother and their mother would actually have to give birth to them again. Now, this has never happened, if Jesus means this neither you, nor I, nor Nicodemus are going to heaven. Understandably Nicodemus was concerned by this and Jesus explains further what he means with:
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."Jesus tells us what born again means here, all of us are born of water, that is our physical birth but to be born again we also need to be 'born of the Spirit' so now we know what being born again is, it is to be born of the Spirit.... Ok, you're probably thinking, that's great... What is born of the Spirit?
Well if you remember I quickly mentioned last week about God having three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. To be born of the Spirit is to be born of the Holy Spirit. That is for the Holy Spirit to work in you and to give you new birth. So being born again is a miraculous work, it is a work of God. God comes and gives you new life, that is what Jesus means when he says to be born of the Spirit. We will look, perhaps next week at Ephesians chapter 2 soon which we can relate to this. I will talk there on how this fits with being born again but if you look at it now you may see how the term born again fits in and why it is termed like this.
Conclusion
We have today looked at what Jesus means by being born again, it is a work of God and is a miracle. We will discuss exactly what effect this has on us when we look at Ephesians 2.
God Bless
